Our project "Walking along Karl Marx street" is addressed to all those who are interested in the history of our
hometown. We'll walk along the main street of Irkutsk, Karl Marx Street, which has been declared a historical and
architectural area, get acquainted with its past and present.
In 2011 Irkutsk will celebrate its 350 year anniversary, so we dedicate our work to this event and see its further
development in the future. While working on the report we decided to put it in electronic form and posted on the Web.
There are over 800 streets in Irkutsk. Their total length is more than 700 km. Each street is a piece of
Irkutsk's history. Almost 350 years our city was created and every age left a memory. Irkutsk witnessed events
that had left a trace in history not only in Siberia but in Russia. All the generations of revolutionaries went through
the city, difficult paths of famous scientists and explorers, researchers in Siberia and Asia ran here. Original title
remained only in a few streets that existed before 1917: Gornaya, Podgornaya, Yamskaya; in streets named
after the classical writers: Tolstoy, Pushkin, Lermontov, Siberian writers: Zagoskin, Omulevskiy, Yadrintsev.
Sometimes  the mass media arise questions about the returning of previous titles to  streets and squares of
Irkutsk. We are not  ready to participate in such serious discussions, but we want to know the history of our
native city and the question "What was there before?" often occurs when we walk and our attention is attracted
by some beautiful buildings.
